Conservation Areas

The Sangre de Cristo and San Luis Valley Conservation Areas conserve the remarkable ecological values of the San Luis Valley and northern New Mexico by protecting wetlands, riparian corridors, and uplands through voluntary conservation easements.

The easements will allow the USFWS to acquire certain property rights such as the right to subdivide or develop infrastructure while leaving the land in private ownership. These conservation areas are some of the newest units of the national Wildlife Refuge System and may ultimately protect more than 500,000 acres of diverse plant communities.
